Text Box: STROKE INDEX EXPLAINED
Many golfers think holes are given a stroke index from hardest to easiest. In reality, they are indexed to maximize the number of halved holes in a match.
According to the English Golf Union: “Of paramount importance is the even spread of the strokes to be received at all handicap differences over the 18 holes. This is best achieved by allocating the odd numbered strokes to the more difficult of the two nines, usually the longest nine, and the even numbers to the other nine”.
The first and second stroke index holes should be placed closed to the centre of each nine and the first six strokes should not be allocated to adjacent holes. The 7th—10th indexes should be allocated so that a player receiving 10 strokes does not receive three strokes on consecutive holes. None of the first eight strokes should be allocated to the first or the last holes. This avoids a player receiving an undue advantage on the 19th hole should a match continue to sudden death. Bit complicated but now you know.

HEART ATTACK!!!

A husband and wife are on the 9th green when suddenly she collapses from a heart attack! “Help me dear,” she groans to her husband.

The husband calls 911 on his mobile, talks for a few minutes, picks up his putter and lines up his putt. His wife raises her head off the green and stares at him. “I’m dying here and you’re putting?”

“Don’t worry dear,” says the husband calmly, “they found a Doctor on the second hole and he’s coming to help you”.

“Well, how long will it take for him to get here,” she asks feebly?

“No time at all, “ says the husband. “Everybody’s already agreed to let him play through.”

Well worth a look.

Plenty of practice pays off for Kevin at

Keele Golf Club.

A round of golf at Gorsty Hill before taking on the early evening Society Day at Keele Golf Club on Thursday 18th June, certainly paid dividends for Kevin Abell when he returned 33 Stableford Points from 95 shots. It was a great round of golf with just two no scoring holes on the 9th and 16th. Kevin playing off an handicap of 19 has been hitting his driver well over recent weeks and this continued at Keele together with sinking some long putts. Kevin finished runner-up at Brookfield Golf Club on our last Society day so this success was no real surprise.

The course was in excellent condition with lush fairways, a fabulous setting with great views and plenty of trees. But what a shame—the  greens were really poor  which really ruined the course. The course, a par 72 and playing 6055 yards, probably has the most potential of any course in the area, it is just a pity that the current owners cannot deliver.  As with Brookfield Golf Club with plenty of trees and hazards to contend with, it was hardly surprising that the Stableford Scores were again low.

In second place was Captain Graham Cooke (17) with 28 points from 98 strokes. Once he gains a little more consistency with his driver and more practice with the short game Graham could win well.   In joint third place was John Smith (25) and Stan Malpass (20) on 26 points, but John snatched 3rd place on count back.

In fifth place was Kevin Sherwin (19) on 24 points. Even round of golf with 11 points on the front 9 and 13 points from the back nine. In sixth was Phil Greatbatch (21) with 23 points from 109 strokes.

In seventh spot was Steven Rushton on 23 points from 108 shots, playing some nice golf but just not finding the form of recent competitions. However, he is still perched at the top of the Stableford Order of Merit Competition.

In eighth place was Andrew Abell (18) with 22 points and still not finding his form. A little patience and the scores will return shortly to match a strong will to win. In ninth place was Russ Howard (29) on 21 points followed by our guest for the day Karl Furniss who came in with 18 points. Hope you enjoyed the day Karl.

Finally, Brian Abell (29) with 10 points.

So, onto the handicap axe—2 shots from Kevin Abell reflecting his win at Keele plus  his general play at both Keele and Brookfield Golf Club. Well played Kevin well deserved. Shots given back to Brian 29 to 36 and Russ 29 to 32 to enable them to be more competitive on our next Society Days.

Well done to everyone and look forward to playing at our next day out at Barlaston Golf Club.
