The Captains “Trough”

Obviously we’re not, so I’ll move on.

Firstly let me say how excited I am to have been nominated by everyone/most people/hardly anyone/just Phil cause nobody else wanted to do it  as this years captain. It’s an honour to follow in the footsteps of Barry & Graham.

I would like to thank Phil, on everyone’s behalf, for yet again coming up with an excellent itinerary for the year, and a superb venue for our 2010 tour. I for one can’t wait for September, and I know that last years champion Ed can’t wait to meet up with a few old flames who now graze on the hillside overlooking Llandudno. Don’t forget your wellies Ed !

Kevin Abell defends “The Barry Brereton Trophy” this year. His mother & father are still speaking to him despite taking the trophy from their favourite son who was champion in 2008. It’s now up to Brian to complete a hat trick of Abell victories this year. No pressure Brian, but it’s what mum & dad have always wanted.

Our membership is now 24, and a big welcome to new members Karl, Joe and Darren. Karl, a Man City fan, is my tip to do well this year, especially if that cheating referee Alan Wiley is officiating on any of the society days. Still, Karl won’t be going to Wembley this year.

“put a few words together”……………Do you get it now ??

Everyone now has their new handicaps and hopefully you are happy with the new automated system. I’ve only had a couple of reply’s to my e-mail the other day, so I’m assuming that either everyone is in agreement or you’re just that pissed off that you don’t want to speak to me anymore. In general there has been an “across the board” increase, but “relatively” speaking the differences are not major. This highlights the great work done by the handicappers over the past few years, who have performed this difficult task with little thanks and more than enough, well lets just say “banter”, aimed in their direction (holds hand up in apology). So many thanks to Phil, Phil Greatbach, Barry & Graham for their unselfish work on previous tours and society days.

However, as the society numbers become larger, it has become apparent to most that a “mechanical” system is now required, and by using this spreadsheet based system then
maybe, just maybe, Steve Ruddell and Jon Downs will do a little less moaning. Somehow I doubt it though.

As you know, following the devastating demolition of the Port Vale team last year by the mighty mighty potters, the “potteries derby” has now been replaced by a Young Un’s / Old Un’s competition. When all the names for the tour are confirmed, the two teams will be generated based on everyone’s date of birth, the 12 oldest playing the 12 youngest. Phil will be selecting the Old Un’s captain, and I will select the captain for the Young Un’s team. This selection will probably take place in June, so I’m looking for a strong leader to emerge from the bunch of “young” p***heads that are currently available. It’s going to be a difficult choice.

Perhaps something that is mainly for the Friday PIGS (ie. those that do or can play at Gorsty reasonably frequently on a Friday), I fancy having a little matchplay league that will run over the season. Held on non-society days, each player will play every other player once each, throughout the summer. No set dates and you just make your own arrangements. Two points for a win & 1 for a draw and at the end of the season the top 4 play off. It would probably mean that you’d have to play once or twice a month to take part. Purely for fun as obviously not everyone can commit to the extra games at Gorsty. Anyway, send me an e-mail or make a comment on the ‘Sty Blog” if you’re interested and we’ll take it from there.

Finally I’d like to submit my closing statement. Without the enthusiasm shown by the layabout that is Phil Stonier (who lets face it, has nothing better to do), this society would not be what it is today, and our golfing (& social) experience would be poorer for it. No matter who is captain, Phil will always be the focal point of this society, and my role is merely to serve “the one that does not work but still complains about a bad back”. As Phil has previously commented, the emphasis this year is fun.

Yours from the trough,
Andrew

Ps. I said .“put a few WORDS TOGETHER”…so the WORDS are all TOGETHER
………….Oh , I give up.
